When John Parker from Alnwick became unemployed he decided that he would look into turning his hobby interests into a business opportunity.
"I wasn't prepared to sit around" explained John who decided to contact NBSL and explore turning his lifetime interest in renovation and home improvements into a business. John continued, "I met with Steve Peart from NBSL'S Morpeth Business Advice Centre and we discussed how I could develop my existing skills through additional professional training".
John who had always been a capable tiler, wanted to learn about laying natural stone flooring. NBSL assisted John to find a suitable training company and were able to help him organise funding through Project North East's Flexible Fund.
Enterprise Coach Steve Peart said "John was determined and committed from the outset to start a business and his desire to attend training to improve his skills is evidence of this. Once John had successfully completed his training we worked together to prepare a business plan which was then presented to Job Centre Plus and Northumberland Employability and Work Service (NEWS) to secure funding which John used to purchase tools, business insurance, leaflets and business cards".
John concluded "the help I received from NBSL completely changed my prospects; I already have several contracts to complete including the tiling of seven bathrooms for a hotel in Northumberland".
