Bernadette Hyde from Seahouses in Northumberland is taking her hairdressing experience out of the traditional salon to the homes of clients in Seahouses, Alnwick and Alnmouth.
Single Mother Bernadette had worked for a local hair salon for the previous 8 years, but the salon was facing closure and Bernadette was to be made redundant. Not wanting to draw benefits, Bernadette decided it might be time to strike out on her own as a mobile hairdresser. In order to weigh up the pros and cons and to help her decide if her idea was viable, Bernadette contacted NBSL.
Through NBSL Bernadette worked with a Personal Business Adviser throughout the start up process. One of Bernadette’s concerns centred round her family. How would self employment affect her income and would she still be able to care for her children? Flexibility was an important issue.
Personal Business Adviser Laura Mathieson assisted Bernadette to work through the start up process. They spent some time reviewing the marketing strategy for Bernadette’s new venture as although she had lots of support from existing clients she needed to reach out to the public in order to build a stronger client base. Laura also referred Bernadette to Northumberland Employability and Work Service (NEWS) for a grant to help with start up costs.
Bernadette said of her experience, “NBSL have given me good advice and although at the present time there is limited funding available for people wishing to start a small business, NBSL strived to find ways to help and I found this very refreshing”.
